Do I need to fit into Society?
Richard Branson, the adventurer and founder of Virgin Records, Airlines, Phones etc. says he particularly loves this quote. He said:
“Name a role-model. Are they ‘normal’? Name somebody you love. Are they ‘normal’? I very much doubt it. Everybody should strive to be exceptional. The world is made up of extraordinary people. Don’t waste your time trying to be normal. I’ve always been a square peg in a round hole, and I like it that way.”
Why fit in when you were born to stand out!
A Classic Quote by Dr Seuss… We put this quote on our dining room wall because it reminds us that even though tens of thousands of people pass through this centre each year, everybody is a precious individual. Or to quote Dr Seuss again,
“Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you.”
You may wonder if you could ever stand out by being an eccentric millionaire like Richard Branson, or a famous author like Theodore Geisel (Dr Seuss’ real name). However, if you think about it, ‘standing-out’ is just another way of saying ‘out-standing’. We think the quote is saying everyone has a unique purpose, that each of us is here be outstanding in some way that only they can be.
And we do face pressure to fit in. It’s natural and very common to worry that if people know who we really are, if we stand out, people might not like what they see. No one likes feeling like an idiot or unacceptable.
Be You – Everyone Else is Taken!
Because we are a part of The Salvation Army, which is a Christian organisation, we think our purpose and identity comes from being created by God, in God’s image, and loved by God. You might have noticed we often wear funny uniforms, and as if that didn’t stand out enough, we love being in loud brass bands in public places.
As Richard Branson would say, we don’t waste time being ‘normal’. For us it’s because we are very joyful about the love of Jesus Christ, and we want to make a noise about it!
But you might find a completely different way to stand out. King David is quoted in the Bible as saying
“I will praise you God because I have been remarkably and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful, my soul knows this very well. (Psalm 139:14)”
Don’t be afraid to either be Outstanding or simply to Stand Out.
So don’t be afraid to either be outstanding or simply stand out in your own way. God loves you, thinks you are wonderful, and designed you to do wonderful things.
